What Is Energy Star Changing?
Overall, Energy Star qualification requirements will increase for windows, doors and skylights. Efforts have also been made to keep Energy Star products affordable for consumers who wish to live a greener lifestyle by selecting energy-efficient products for their home. Here’s a summary of what’s coming down the pike:
- Starting in January 2015, window, door and skylight products must meet new criteria in order to carry the label of “Energy Star Certified,” according to EnergyStar.gov.
- However, the Northern Zone of the U.S., which includes Washington State, will have until January 2016 to meet the new criteria, which will allow manufacturers more time to ensure certified products are both available and affordable.
- To be Energy Star Certified, windows and skylights must meet criteria established for their climate zone, while doors must meet the criteria for their selected glazing level. You can take a look at the new energy efficiency requirements — which include U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient levels — in tables provided by Energy Star here.
- Windows, sliding doors, skylights or swinging doors must also meet air leakage requirements to be Energy Star certified.
- Energy Star products must also have installation instructions either online or packaged with the product to remain certified.
