Spring Cleaning for Doors and Windows

Lake Washington Windows & Doors Favicon

Spring cleaning means deep cleaning, especially after a wet winter that dredges up mud. An easy way to make your home look cleaner is to thoroughly wash windows and doors indoors and out. You’ll be surprised how much better the view is through glass that looks brand new!

These tips are also great for building curb appeal, whether you’re expecting spring guests or are in the process of selling.

Cleaning Interior and Exterior Doors

Caring for wood doors is a careful process. Start with the manufacturer’s recommendations so you won’t damage an expensive finish. Manufacturers like ProVia Door Company offer extensive care and finishing instruction to safely protect wood doors. Do a quick online search for your door brand to see what recommendations are available first.

Give interior doors made from other materials a refresh too. Jeld-Wen recommends cleaning doors and hardware at least twice a year, monthly for homes near the coast. Jeld-Wen offers an easy-to-follow checklist for inspecting a door’s condition in their care and maintenance manual pdf. They suggest using mild soap and water to clean door hardware and the door itself, and also taking time to replace any compromised pieces and tighten screws. If you plan to practice upkeep during spring cleaning, you won’t have to remember when to do maintenance on your doors.

Glass Shower Doors

Don’t overlook the other doors in your home that get used every day—your shower doors. Glass shower doors can quickly become dull with residue. Brighten up your bathroom with clean, fresh-looking shower doors using these tips that BobVila.com gathered from cleaning pro Jill Schoff.

Schoff recommends eschewing harsh cleaning products for a simple paste of water and baking soda that can be rubbed onto the doors and washed off with vinegar. How to deep cleanse the mechanical parts of your shower? For non-sliding doors, Schoff suggests stopping the drain and then letting vinegar soak in the track overnight.

Washing Windows and Screens

Follow these pro tips for cleaning windows and give your home a brand-new look. Milgard recommends mild dish soap and water to cleanse windows, which is safe even for Low-E glass coatings. They also warn that some cleaning methods should always be avoided: products with petroleum or corrosives, high-pressure cleaning, and any sharp or abrasive tools.

Washing screens is even easier. Mild soap, water, and a soft-bristled brush are the instruments needed to wash dusty, grimy screens, Milgard advises. Not only can you clean window screens this way, but you can also wash a sliding patio door screen before summer use.

If your spring cleaning has shown that you need new doors or windows installed, get an estimate now so you can enjoy the coming weather without worrying about a window or door that doesn’t let the summer air in.
