Energy-efficiency isn’t just important during winter when you want to lock heat in. It’s also essential during the summer, when you want to keep heat out, ultimately saving on cooling methods like air conditioning and electric fans. Here is a look at how energy-efficient windows work to keep the summer heat at bay.

Energy-Efficient Windows Material and Construction
Not all windows are equal, especially those in older homes. Energy-efficient materials and building processes lend an edge to the windows available now.
What to look for? Well-known windows maker Milgard stands behind advancements like double glazing and Low-E glass. Windows with double glazing have two pieces of glass with a space in between to keep heat from passing through. You can even opt for triple glazing if you want an additional barrier between you and the climate. Some window models also put a chemical called argon gas in between the glazing that blocks heat movement even more.
Low-E is a transparent glass coating that helps guard against the sun’s rays and temperature. When applied to a pane, less solar energy is captured, and interior furnishings are less likely to be damaged by the sun.
Geographical Considerations
Geographical location and climate are a factor in determining energy-efficiency needs. Another element to consider is where your windows are located. Window manufacturer Jeld-Wen explains that windows facing east and west can transfer summer heat indoors, but windows situated toward the north often do not.
According to Jeld-Wen, the windows expected to capture the most warmth face the south or west. The amount of heat captured by these windows is also influenced by any trees, sheds or similar objects that might provide shade.
