Halloween

While this idea isn’t a wreath, it’s perfectly themed for October 31. You’ll spark more than a few smiles with this creepy-fun design that uses party streamers, paper plates, tape, and a marker. Low-cost and unique, it’ll be a hit at your Halloween party and delight passerby the whole month through. Added bonus: this project is less likely to cause any damage to your door, with no nails or hooks used.

Thanksgiving

Add a dash of fall color to your door with artificial leaves that can withstand the elements. Better Homes and Gardens offers this  tip for a striking, natural piece for your door: take two separate store-bought wreaths, one of leaves, and one of twigs, and fasten together with pipe cleaners. This creative project will come together in a snap so you can spend more time preparing for the big day.

Get Started

Christmas

Forget pine swags and red berries and go with a wreath that wows. Use castoff or dollar store ornaments to fashion a striking wreath that will rival even the brightest holiday lights. Martha Stewart’s ornament wreath tutorial shows how to put this showstopper together in just four steps.

For Any Holiday

In search of a versatile look? These decorations are so adaptable, you can use them anytime, even without a special occasion.

Think delicious when it comes to decor. HGTV’s Brian Patrick Flynn suggests using red pistachios and gluing them to foam to form a colorful unique take on a wreath. If pistachios don’t interest you, get creative with other nonperishable foods or items. Other items you might glue on to fill your wreath: pinecones, small bells, buttons, dried apples, tinsel, or fake snow from a craft store.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, make yourself a candy wreath! This embellishment makes a great gift too. With a little time and a lot of gumdrops, you can fashion a colorful, mouth-watering wreath made of candy like this one from the blog Dream a Little Bigger.

Keep Your Door Safe

Before you hang any decorations, consider your door. You want the quality of your wood, glass, or fiberglass to not be comprised by any temporary garnishing.

Be sure to use accessories for securing anything you put, whether using hooks, tape, or another technique. Save the door surface with an over-the-door wreath hanger that requires no nails, or explore options for non-damaging adhesive hooks.

If you know you’ll be using wreaths on a regular basis, and you don’t mind the modified look, installing a permanent door hanger may be the answer. Don’t pound any nails in on a whim–it can be better to install a hanger that’s secure and matches your door’s design than it is to use nails or adhesives that will mar the finish and need repair.
