Know When to Replace Windows

If you’ve been wondering when to replace your windows, run through this diagnostic checklist. When your home windows show these warning signs, they may need to be replaced soon.

Can You Answer Yes to Any of These Statements?

If you can, new windows could be in order.

Your home is old. If your home is over 15 years old, not only are your windows no longer in peak condition, but they won’t have the latest energy-saving and comfort-control technology.

If your home is historic, you may need to worry about toxic paint. Houses constructed before 1960 are known to have lead-based paint. While your home may not be one of them, you need to proceed with caution when remodeling a house from this era. Get a pro involved and definitely don’t DIY if toxic substances could be involved.

You keep finding condensation around your windows. This can be a tell-tale sign that your windows aren’t doing their job. If they can’t keep the convergence of indoor and outdoor air separate, you may end up with moisture that could damage the interior of your home or cause problematic mildew.

Outdoor sounds are disrupting your home. Before you move to a new neighborhood, consider changing windows. The right windows can help decrease outdoor noise, from playful neighbor kids to a nearby highway. Installing new windows can be a much cheaper and simpler solution than relocating.

Your windows don’t open all the way, have to be propped open, or have other problems that make opening them a pain. Opening a window should be as simple as that–it shouldn’t require you to prop up a sash or have your spouse help.

Ask yourself if you have to employ any “tricks” with your windows. Have you had to instruct guests on how to shimmy, push, or slam windows? If the answer is yes, your windows might not be working correctly, and you may be spending more time than necessary on something that should be effortless.

Another Sign of Outdated Windows

If your windows are single pane, you could be missing out on optimal energy efficiency benefits. It’s important to know that single pane windows aren’t necessarily old, although they can be in older homes. Some homeowners make the choice for single panes, although they aren’t best insulators. Double panes are recommended for maximum temperature control, and triple panes are available too.
