Window painting tips

The professional team at Lake Washington Windows knows how daunting it can seem to paint a window, especially if you have a wall or two of windows. However, we’re here to give you some tips to make the job a little easier.

  • Apply painters tape to hardware, or remove them entirely. Also, line the tracks of the window with painters tape to keep them from getting stuck.
  • If there are any cracks or missing putty, now is the time to fill them.
  • Use a sanding brush to clear away any previous paint dribbles, smooth out the newly filled cracks and make the surface clean. Paint sticks better to clean, dry surfaces.
  • Use a 1 ½” angled, nylon/polyester brush to help make it easier to get into the edges of the sill.
  • It’s best to start painting from the top down, starting with the window that moves and painting the window sill last. Preferably, give the sashes time to dry before painting the sill.
  • To make your paint job last longer, apply a primer first. Experts suggest using a high gloss primer. Be sure to give it enough time to dry and then sand it.
  • Use a satin or eggshell paint to finish as it holds longer with high traffic areas.
