Are you uncertain about whether or not your home needs replacement windows? Check out the following four warning signs that your windows might need to be replaced.
Table of Contents
You Have Moisture Leaks
Leaky windows are problematic for two reasons: one, because all that moisture can lead to property damage and dry rot inside the home, and two, because it could be a sign the window is either deteriorated from age or was installed improperly. If your window is leaking, contact a professional to investigate the location and cause of the leak. In some cases, a simple repair may be all that is needed. In other cases, complete window replacement may be necessary.
Your Windows Are Drafty
Do you get a chill every time you walk past your windows? Chances are your windows aren’t doing their part to help keep your home climate controlled, which not only means discomfort for the homeowner, but also means higher energy bills every month. While temporary fixes like draft snakes and rigid foam barriers can stifle the drafts, often the best long-term solution is replacing the drafty windows with more energy efficient versions.

You Have Rotted Wood Frames
Wood framed windows that have not been properly maintained over the years may suffer damage over time. While small amounts of dry rot might be repaired by digging out the rot to the good wood and placing epoxy in its absence, extensive rotting may require new windows. The good news is modern, clad wood replacement windows are more resistant to wood rot and warping than traditional solid wood windows, providing improved durability with less maintenance.
Your Windows Have Major Condensation Issues
A little condensation in the corners of your windows probably isn’t a problem, but whole-window fog or frost is problematic. The biggest concern is when you have a great deal of condensation between your window panes, which means the seal between the panes is likely broken. Not only can this type of condensation not be wiped away, but it usually means the insulating gases between your window panes have escaped and your windows no longer provide much of a thermal barrier in your home. While repair may be an option in some cases, it may make more sense to replace these problem windows.
